  • Abstract:

Efficient document management of construction projects is essential for their successful delivery. Management of documents generated in construction projects could be a challenging task due to the large number and the dynamically changing nature of engineering deliverables, such as drawings, specifications, schedules, progress reports, and many other items. This paper presents a barcode-assisted system that overcomes issues related to low productivity and high cost that are usually associated with management of documents. The system is expected to save time required to enter data pertaining to a wide range of documents, to improve the accuracy of the data acquisition process, and to enhance the performance and efficiency of many existing commercial Computer Document Management Systems (CDMS). It utilizes barcode technology and database management systems (DBMS) to perform its task. An example application will be presented to demonstrate the use and capabilities of the developed system.
